According to the NCREIF Farmland Index, row cropland is defined as "land that produces a crop that is planted and completely harvested within a specific short-term time period, typically an annual cycle." Row crops include grains (corn, soybeans, wheat, rice), fiber (cotton), and vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes). These crops can produce a stable annual income return in the 3-7 percent range, as well as appreciation in the 3 to 5 percent range for a potential total return of 6 to 12 percent. Row crops should be a part of any core agricultural portfolio.
